"Universities Receive AAA Awards for Drunk Driving Awareness Programs"
The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) was awarded $5,000 by the Automobile Club of Southern California for its dedication to preventing student drinking and driving. This is the third time in four years that UCSB has won the grand prize at the College and University Drinking and Driving Prevention Awards Program.
Among the initiatives put into place at UCSB are new components to its 2003-2004 alcohol and drug abuse education program, including the introduction of drug- and alcohol-abuse counselors in residence halls and programs training parents to recognize drug and alcohol problems in their children. Fees have also been allocated to finance alcohol-free social events, such as movies and concerts, at the university. The program at UCSB has helped reduce incidents of drunk driving and arrests for public misconduct among university students.
