NYC Jail Denies Inmates Sweets
New York City’s Department of Corrections has implemented a new, healthier menu that includes no butter, no whole milk, and to the dismay of some inmates, no sweets.
“These people are in our custody, and they don’t get to make their own choices. We have a moral obligation to make sound choices for them,” said DOC Commissioner Martin Horn.
The Switch to Healthy Foods
There are about 14,000 inmates in the city’s jail system. Their diet will now consist of whole wheat bread, steamed vegetables, rice, and unsweetened muffins, among other healthy foods.
“We have no choice but to eat what they give us. It’s bland—so I guess that’s healthy,” said one inmate.
Less Costly?
The updated menu is no less expensive than the previous one, but Horn believes that it may cost less over the long-term.
“The cost of an inmate having a stroke or going into diabetic shock is far greater than keeping people healthy to the extent we can,” he said.
