California DUIs reach every demographic

In 2002 alone, 179,663 people in California were arrested for a DUI. In 2003, 39 percent of the 4,215 vehicle fatalities in California were alcohol related. Though most people associate DUIs with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, DUIs can be given for operating vehicles under the influence of marijuana and narcotics as well. According to police, DUI offenses continue to occur across every demographic despite the well-known impairment alcohol and narcotics can have on driving.

According to California DUI laws, a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or greater is not considered legal. A blood alcohol concentration of 0.10 would mean the person is above the legal limit and that 1/100 th of the fluid in the person's blood is alcohol. The reason many people enjoy drinking alcohol is because of how slow it is metabolized compared to how quickly it is absorbed.

The liver is only able to handle so much alcohol at a time, leaving the rest of the alcohol to pump through the veins and into the brain. After one standard drink, or 12 ounces of beer, five ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism says within 30 to 45 minutes after consumption the amount of alcohol in a person's blood will peak. When the alcohol becomes built up in the body, motor skills and vision will become impaired, even if the driver does not feel drunk.
