Persistent Offender Bill OK'd by Connecticut Senate

After a heated debate, the Connecticut state Senate passed a bill to strengthen penalties for repeat violent offenders. Referred to as the persistent offender bill, it was proposed as an alternative to the three-strikes legal concept.

Double & Triple Sentences

Under the proposed measure, repeat offenders would face double the mandatory minimum sentence for a second serious felony conviction and triple the mandatory minimum for the third.

Twenty one crimes would be affected by the bill, which has yet to be voted on by the House.

Bill Provisions

The legislation also calls for $10 million in funding to hire additional prosecutors, public defenders, and probation officers; to provide more programs for ex-cons; and to expand a cold case unit.
