Defense Prepares Psychiatric Defense for 'Preppy Killer'

The defense attorney for Robert E. Chambers Jr., dubbed the 'preppy killer' after murdering Jennifer Levin in 1986, is planning to assert that her client did not “act knowingly” when he allegedly sold cocaine to an undercover officer last year.

Chambers was arrested in October and taken to Rikers Island, where he was given methadone for his heroin addiction.

“They were taking him down slowly,” said defense attorney Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg.

Years of Drug Abuse

According to Van Leer-Greenberg, Chambers had told doctors prior to the arrest that he smoked cocaine and marijuana, had a 10-12 bag a day heroin habit, and abused a prescription painkiller.

Van Leer-Greenberg also said that Chambers had been addicted to drugs since he was 14 and continued to use even while incarcerated for Levin’s murder. Because he was so addled by drugs, Van Leer-Greenberg claims that Chambers did not know what he was doing.
