Florida Bill Wants to Make Video Voyeurism a Felony
Proposed legislation in Florida would make video voyeurism a third degree felony sex offender crime. Under current law, video voyeurism is considered a misdemeanor offense that can only be upgraded to felony status after a second offense.
The bill is intended to prevent unsuspecting youths from being recorded by hidden cameras. It specifically targets individuals:
- over the age of 18 who commit video voyeurism against youths under the age of 16 in their custody.
- over the age of 24 who commit an act of voyeurism against someone 16 or younger.
- over the 18 and employed by a school who commits video voyeurism against a student
Though the state budget is facing cuts, the bill stands a good chance of passing. Analysts say passing the bill into law would have very little financial impact.
