According to new reports, a new wrongful conviction law has just been signed in the state of Florida.
According to the new law, which was signed by Governor Charlie Crist, those who have been wrongfully imprisoned will be eligible for compensation from the state.
Law Details
The new law, known as SB 756, people who have been wrongfully accused of a crime and sent to prison will receive $50,000 for every year they spent in prison.
Although those with prior felony records will be excluded from the law, they would be able to pursue other compensation through the Legislature’s claim process.
What Provoked the New Law?
Lawmakers decided to take action and create the law after discovering that in recent years several inmates were proven innocent after DNA testing.
Florida is reportedly the 25th state to create a law that will compensate for the wrongfully imprisoned.
Nine people to this date have been proven innocent and released from a Florida prison after having DNA testing.
