Jail Guards Charged With Attacking Inmates

Eleven jail guards at a Brooklyn federal prison viciously attacked two inmates in a blatant violation of prisoner rights.  They then attempted to cover up their abuse by making it appear as though the victim had tried to kill himself, according to prosecutors claims in the federal case.

The indictment charges were brought against 11 former and current correction officers—including a supervisor—for violating the constitutional rights of the two prisoners in separate attacks in 2002 and 2006.

Capt. Salvatore Lopresti, the supervisor, “led a vicious and brutal attack on one of the victims and was the ringleader for covering it up,” said Sarah Coyne, prosecuting attorney in the case.

According to the head of the Inspector General’s New York office, James Tomlinson, the accused jail guards “not only inflicted pain on the inmates they are charged with abusing, they also undermined the integrity and safety of the detention facility, other inmates, and their fellow employees.”
