Harsher DUI Law Passed In Hawaii
Hawaii recently passed a new DUI law to crack down on drunk drivers with a blood alcohol level of .15 or higher. The legal limit is still .08, but the new law states that DUI offenders with levels above .15 can have both their license and vehicle registration revoked for up to a year.
“Folks who are driving at .15, they shouldn’t even be behind the wheel at that point. They’re basically endangering everyone,” said Department of Transportation (DOT) spokesperson Scott Ishikawa.
Strict Penalties
According to the DOT, convicted DUI offenders must also spend 14 hours in rehab and either:
- Pay fines of up to $1,000
- Serve two to five days in jail
- Commit to three days of community service
These penalties apply to first time offenders. As in many other states, penalties become increasingly harsh with repeat offenses.
