Illinois law to keep potentially violent criminals incarcerated for longer

A new Illinois law, House Bill 1039, took effect immediately upon being signed into law yesterday by Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The law will help keep potentially violent criminals incarcerated and off the streets for longer periods of time.

The bill creates stiff penalties for habitual criminals – those convicted of two or more violent crimes - caught with guns. Individuals would face prison sentences of six to 30 years upon conviction, the same sentence that is possible for any Class X crime, including first-degree murder, sexual assault of a child, arson, armed robbery, home invasion, aggravated criminal sexual assault and gunrunning.

Illinois still not satisfied with the reduction in DUIs

The tougher DUI safety measures signed into law range from increasing DUI penalties involving death to creation of the aggravated DUI offense. While the Governor signed the new DUI penalties into law, the Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois State Police are conducting the largest ever DUI crackdown over the holiday weekend with more than 800 roadside safety checks, taking a zero tolerance approach to impaired driving.
