Louisiana Cracks Down on Drunk Drivers with Stricter DWI Laws

New, tougher DWI laws took effect in Louisiana this week. The laws mark an attempt by legislators to crack down on first-time drunk drivers as well as repeat offenders.

Under the new laws, first time DWI offenders will lose their license for a year but may obtain a “hardship” license to drive to and from work, church, or school. Previously, the law mandated only a 90-day license suspension.

Ignition Interlock Devices

Those who opt for a hardship license must have an ignition interlock device installed in their car at their own expense. The device, which is hooked up to a vehicle’s ignition, contains a mouthpiece that a driver must blow into before the car can be started.

The car will start if there are no traces of alcohol on the driver’s breath. Then after a designated period of time, the driver is required to blow into the mouthpiece again to ensure he/she hasn’t been drinking since starting the vehicle or didn’t have someone else blow into it initially.

Repeat DWI Offenders

Repeat DWI offenders will lose their license for two years and any subsequent convictions will result in an additional three-year suspension. Under the prior law, a second DWI would result in a 12-month license suspension and subsequent convictions a two-year suspension.
