State Supreme Court Justice Michael Garson allegedly stole nearly $500,000 from the savings of an elderly aunt, and even after his indictment was announced in May, District Attorney Charles Hynes and officials at Kingsborough Community College saw no reason why he could not continue to teach criminal justice and other civic courses at the community college.
The judge could get a 15-year prison term if convicted, but he believes the principle of “innocent until proven guilty” is a powerful teaching tool. Garson said if any students ask about his indictment he is truthful about the subject.
While a number of students interviewed gave the judge high marks, many seemed unaware of his legal battles. After a News inquiry, the school’s administration said it was looking into Garson’s job status.
