Michigan Parents Charged with Child Abuse

Anthony and Marsha Springer, the father and stepmother of 16-year-old Calista Springer were each charged with one count of manslaughter and one count of child abuse, Dec. 1, by Prosecuting Attorney Douglas Fisher in St. Joseph County, Michigan. The charges stemmed from Calista's death in February 2008, when her Centreville, Michigan home caught fire. Calista was chained to her bed in her room on the second floor, unable to escape the fire.

Long-term Child Abuse Claimed

Anthony Springer had told authorities that Calista was a special-needs child and that he restrained her with the chain at night to protect her from unsafe behavior. However, other relatives and friends of Calista reported that she had been the victim of child abuse by her father and adoptive mother/stepmother over a long period of time.

Child Abuse

Child abuse is a very serious criminal offense and is not taken lightly. There are many different types of child abuse, including:

  • Neglect: when a child’s needs are not met
  • Physical abuse: beating, shaking, hitting kicking, burning, etc.
  • Sexual abuse: any sexual conduct between a child and an adult
  • Emotional abuse: harsh, critical treatment, verbal assaults, or the lack of attention and affection

Fifteen Years in Prison Possible

If they are found guilty, the charges could result in 15-year prison sentences for both Anthony and Marsha Springer. Their arraignments are scheduled for Dec. 15 before District Judge William Welty. Anthony Springer is being represented by attorney Michael Mestelle of Sturgis, Michigan and Marsha Springer is represented by Kalamazoo lawyer Victor Bland.
