A man living in Greene County, Missouri will be compensated for his wrongful conviction and imprisonment.
The victim was falsely accused and as a result spent two years behind bars.
Innocent Man Accused
Armand Villasana was convicted of kidnapping and raping a woman in 1999 and attempted to prove his innocence at the time in court.
“I would describe it as a kangaroo court,” says Villasana. “There was no evidence against me. It was like they weren’t listening.”
Villasana was convicted and sentenced to 70 years in prison.
DNA Tests Set Victim Free
In 2000, DNA evidence set Villasana free; however he recently discovered that he won’t be compensated for the year and a half he spent in jail before his conviction.
According to Missouri law, his time spent in jail is worth $50 a day; but Villasana disagrees and is fighting for more.
“Those people that charged me admitted to their mistakes,” says Villasana. “I shouldn’t have to fight for it. I’ve been fighting for my life for years.”
Villasana is set to go back to court regarding all the legal fees and time he spent in prison and currently doesn’t know when he’ll see any of the money owed to him.
