Governor Cleared of Corruption Allegations
The governor of Nevada, Jim Gibbons, was investigated for two years by the FBI for corruption after a former employee of a software company with military contracts said the company's president bribed Gibbons. His defense attorney, Abbe Lowell, said Nov. 2 that the U.S. Justice Department told him Gibbons will not be charged with a crime.
Investigated for Receiving Illegal Gifts/Bribes from Defense Contractor
Gibbons was in his first term as governor when Dennis Montgomery, formerly with eTreppid Technologies LLC, said that Warren Trepp, the company's founder, gave Governor Gibbons a Caribbean cruise and money in exchange for Gibbons' help getting defense contracts for eTreppid. Montgomery's credibility was gravely in doubt once the e-mails he was claiming proved the bribes were shown to be faked.
No statement from the Justice Department has been issued at this point regarding the case. An anonymous source with the Department confirmed that there will be no charges against Gibbons, a former Republican congressman who has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
False Allegations of Wrongdoing
Attorney Lowell issued a statement: "It should be crystal clear that the only persons who should be investigated or charged are those who made false allegations of wrongdoing and who tried to fuel this investigation for their own private purposes…The people of Nevada should be proud to know that their governor is the hardworking, honest and ethical man they elected in the first place."
