New Hampshire Legislators Take Up Drug Law

Two New Hampshire state representatives have proposed legislation that would make possession of small quantities of marijuana a civil violation rather than a criminal misdemeanor.

“The culture is changing, and I think the law should reflect those changes,” said Rep. Andrew Edwards, one of the bill’s cosponsors. “Non violent drug offenders shouldn’t be locked up with career criminals.”

Adamant Opposition

However, not everyone agrees that the move toward decriminalization of marijuana is a good one.

Exeter Police Chief Richard Kane expressed concern that reducing the penalty for possessing minor amounts of the drug would “eventually lead to legalization and…that’s heading in the wrong direction.”

Similarly, Nashua Police Chief Donald Conley said he thinks changing the law would send “the wrong message.”

House Vote in March

A House vote on the bill is expected in March. If passed, New Hampshire would join Maine, North Carolina, Ohio, New York, and several other states that have passed laws decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana.
