A New Jersey court recently rejected scores of municipalities who requested tougher sex laws be implemented throughout the state.
The appellate court panel agreed that making revisions to the current law, known as Megan’s Law, will conflict with the state’s landmark law.
Law Enforced to Protect Children
According to reports, more than 100 townships throughout New Jersey have implemented their own laws to protect children from convicted sex offenders.
However, Cherry Hill and Galloway townships want to toughen the current law and prevent offenders from living within 2, 500 feet of any school, park, playground or day care center.
Ruling Debated
Municipal officials and supporters of the initiatives are criticizing the court’s decision and are reportedly considering appealing to the New Jersey Supreme Court.
“We believe they work together. The court has decided that the reintegration of sex offenders is more important that the protection of our children from the most heinous of criminal offenses,” says Demetrios K. Stratis, a lawyer in Washington.
Court Rules in Favor of Those Convicted
The court’s ruling was based in part on the experiences of two registered sex offenders from Cherry Hill.
James Barclay and Jefferey Finguerra moved within 2,500 feet of a Catholic High School for crimes they committed as teenagers and were asked to move per the request of the community.
