Judge Limits Use of Force in NYC Jails

A US District Judge approved a class action settlement this week in an attempt to reduce the use of force against inmates in New York City jails. This settlement requires the installation of hundreds of surveillance cameras in these detention facilities and improved guard training. This million-dollar deal was made in the 2002 Legal Aid Society lawsuit between the city and the lawyers representing 22 inmates.

This settlement will affect most of the inmates of 11 jails throughout New York City.

For the last two decades, legal agreements such as these have improved the conditions in New York City jails for thousands of inmates. This most recent settlement is not only intended to improve conditions for more inmates but also to compensate those who are victims of violent encounters with jail guards.

The recent settlement will provide $2.2 million in compensation to inmates who have suffered violent attacks from guards. One man was left blind and others suffered fractured from these incidents. The compensation for these victims ranges from $15,000 to $575,000.

One attorney for New York City points out that violent encounters such as these have decreased by 33 percent in the past five years, largely due to measures like the one recently passed via settlement.
