A New Jersey legislative panel recently released a bill that would replace the death penalty with life imprisonment. If the measure is passed, the state would be the first to abolish the capital punishment since its reinstatement by the Supreme Court in 1976.
The bill was pushed forward by the state Senate Judiciary Committee in an 8-2 vote a little more than a week ago. To be passed, the measure requires approval by the state Legislature and Governor John S. Corzine.
In December 2005, the Legislature formed a commission to study the death penalty. A month later, the commission reported that capital punishment did not deter murder and was a more costly penalty than life imprisonment.
New Jersey has no put any prisoners to death since 1963, even though the state restored the death penalty 25 years ago in 1982.
