OB-GYN Found Guilty of Sex Crimes

OB-GYN Found Guilty of Sex Crimes

After a four week trial and three days of deliberations, a Seattle jury has found Dr. Charles Momah, guilty of sex crimes against his patients.  Momah is a 49-year-old obstetrician-gynecologist who formally practiced in Burien and Federal Way, Washington.  He has not practiced since September 2003 when state authorities suspended his license.  The King County Superior Court jury convicted Momah of two counts of rape and two counts of indecent liberties against four former patients who testified against him.

Momah, who testified in his own defense, admitted to having sex with two of his former patients, but argued these acts were consensual.  He claimed that, though his actions were unprofessional, they were not criminal.  He tried to persuade the court that the sex crimes allegations were the product of misunderstandings.  The jury did not buy this criminal defense.

While a sentencing date has not been set, the former doctor is facing up to sixteen years behind bars for committing these sex crimes.  Washington’s Department of Health will begin disciplinary proceedings against Momah in January.  He awaits another criminal trial in which he has been charged with three counts of health care fraud.  He faces at least a dozen civil lawsuits filed on behalf of former patients who claim Dr. Momah sexually abused them or botched surgeries.
