A Wisconsin police chief who gave himself a citation for a traffic violation claims that he has been congratulated from people all over the world and has even refused to accept money to pay the fines.
In September 2006, Chief Dick Knoebel drove his car past a stopped school bus that had its lights flashing. He wrote himself a citation for $235 and took four points off his driving record. Knoebel’s story surfaced because of court records and media attention.
“Police officers do good things everyday, and that doesn’t get reported,” said Knoebel, who has been the chief of police in a town near Milwaukee for 20 years. “All you hear about in the news is when a police officer is in trouble.”
People as far as Thailand, Russia, and New Zealand were touched by Knoebel’s lack of hypocrisy and praised him in emails. Two people even sent $15 to help pay the ticket fine.
