Ohio Priest Child Abuse Laws to Change

The Columbus, Ohio Roman Catholic Bishop Frederick Campbell spoke out against a proposed bill that would let child-abuse victims who were abused in the past file civil lawsuits against their attackers.  The new law is set to be passed by the Ohio House Judiciary Committee and would allow cases from as long as 35 years ago to be able to be filed in court.

Bishop Campbell asked that the law not be passed, but instead proposed a list of names that could be accessed by the public instead.  Critics contend that the Bishop’s proposal does not do enough to address the issues that still plague victims of child-abuse at the hands of Catholic priests.

The Ohio Senate passed a bill in March that would force any church officials to report cases of suspected or known child abuse to law enforcement or state officials.

Current state law in Ohio only gives victims of child-abuse one year to report the abuse in a civil suit.  The year begins at the person’s 18th birthday.  The proposed bill seeks to make that time longer, as long as 20 years, but would only cover any abuse that happened after the law’s passage.  Another facet of the proposed bill would include abuse that occurred up to 35 years ago, but would give victims only one year to report it in a civil case.
