Police Beating Victim Gets $450,000 Settlement

A 39-year-old Compton man who was videotaped being beaten by a police officer has reached a tentative $450,000 settlement with the city of Los Angeles in a personal injury lawsuit, his attorney said.

Stanley Miller, who was suspected of car theft and led law enforcement officials on a 21-mile, high-speed car chase, was kneed and struck more than 10 times with a heavy, metal flashlight by one of the officers.

The officer has since been found guilty of using unnecessary force by a Board of Rights Committee and fired from the LAPD. LAPD chief William J. Bratton has also announced that the department will begin to phase out the use of big metal flashlights.

Miller’s beating, which has been compared to the infamous police assault on Rodney King, entitled him to seek economic and non-economic damages for his losses. Miller and the city have tentatively agreed on a $450,000 settlement amount, which must still be approved by the city council.

“I think it’s a good, solid settlement in light of what occurred,” said Brown Greene, Miller’s attorney. “The city stepped up to the plate.”
