Reckless Mother Charged

The mother of a 13-year-old girl who nearly died after contracting a severe infection from a belly piercing has been accused of child endangerment.

Deborah Robinson, 39, is charged with recklessness for wantonly allowing her daughter—a child under 14—to suffer serious bodily harm. Authorities claim Robinson sat back and watched her daughter drop 40 pounds, become weak and incontinent over the duration of one month without taking her to the hospital.

However, defense attorney Janet Macnab claims that Robinson was a struggling single mother who tried her hardest to care for her daughter. Allegedly, the teenager’s condition had appeared to be improving since the swelling and puss around her navel had subsided.

Furthermore, Robinson told medical technicians that she was suspicious of doctors and preferred to care for her daughter herself.

“This story is a story of poverty, of ignorance, of a single mother with two children trying to do the best that she could do with very little resources,” Macnab said.

The girl has been placed into state custody and she has recovered fully after many surgeries.
