FBI Releases Safety Statistics of Big U.S. Cities
New York is still the safest of the country’s 10 largest cities, with approximately one crime reported for every 37 people, according to FBI statistics for the year 2005.
The total number of reported criminal activities in New York fell nearly 4.3 percent last year, and the nationwide rate dropped 1.2 percent.
Further police statistics reveal that crime in the Big Apple has continued to decrease this year—down
5.04 percent—compared to the same time in 2005.
San Jose was the second safest large city in the U.S. followed by Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, San Antonia, and Phoenix, and Dallas.
Nationwide statistics found that violent crimes—rape, robbery, murder, and aggravated assault—rose 2.3 percent in 2005. However, New York City saw almost a 2 percent fall in reported violent crimes.
