A number of states are now considering whether to require registered sex offenders to provide their e-mail address in addition to their physical address. Currently, only three states—Kentucky, Arizona and Virginia—require sex offenders to provide this information.
Connecticut is one of at least a dozen other states with proposals aimed at combating online sexual predators. If state legislators vote to pass the bill, convicted sex offenders will have to register their e-mail address as well as instant message addresses or other Internet identifiers.
MySpace.com, the popular social networking site, has offered its support of these bills and recently removed the profiles of 7,000 registered sex offenders who had set up accounts.
“Mandatory sex offender e-mail registration legislation would significantly expedite this process and help keep sex offenders off our sites,” said the site’s chief security officer, Hemanshu Nigam.
The bill in Connecticut has already passed in the House and is awaiting approval by the state Senate.
