Gov. Takes New Approach to Garner Support for DUI Bill

The governor of South Carolina has taken to the Internet to gain support for a bill that would strengthen the state’s DUI laws.

Gov. Mark Sanford recently posted a video on the popular Internet broadcasting site YouTube. The video cites DUI statistics and features the mother of a five-year-old boy who was killed in 2005 by a drunk driver.

“The purpose of the video is to help make real to people the tragedy of having such weak DUI laws in our state…The video is about showing that this issue isn’t just about statistics – it’s about saving lives,” said Joel Sawyer, spokesman for the governor.

The House has already passed a tougher DUI bill, and the governor hopes the video will encourage the Senate to follow suit. The bill is now awaiting consideration by the Senate subcommittee.
