Supreme Court Approves Right to Keep Guns
According to reports, the Supreme Court recently ruled that Americans have the right to keep a gun in their home for purposes of self-defense.
The news comes as a shock to many seeing as it strikes down a portion of the handgun ban implemented in the District of Columbia.
Court Supports the 2nd Amendment
In a 5-4 vote, the court decided to support the 2nd Amendment, which states citizens’ right to “keep and bear arms.”
Justice Antonin Scalia supported the authors intentions to protect the rights of the people to carry weapons, as well to be used to defend themselves and their community.
This ruling has been recorded as the first to strike down a gun law that is based upon the 2nd Amendment.
Strict Guidelines Follow Ruling
Although the ruling has been approved there are several guidelines and restrictions that of course are linked to the decision.
For example, Scalia stressed that felons and the mentally ill will not be permitted to own guns, no matter what the circumstance.
The government can also limit when and where people have the guns, such as not near schools or government buildings.
“Like most rights, the right to the 2nd Amendment is not unlimited,” explains Scalia.
