Two men who were previously imprisoned in Texas for crimes that they didn’t commit are now pleading with the senate for reforms.
The men were reportedly only two of nine exonerated prisoners who spoke last week at a forum to examine the underlying reasoning for Texas’ wrongful convictions.
Some Found to be Wrongfully Imprisoned
Billy Smith and James Giles know firsthand what it’s like to spend time behind bars for a crime they didn’t commit.
However, they never imagined they would have a voice in front of the state Senate chamber and to expose their wrongful imprisonment.
Smith is reportedly one of 17 men in Dallas County who spent time in jail, in his case, more than 19 years, after being wrongfully convicted of rape.
Giles spent more than 10 years in a Dallas County jail up against the same false charges.
DNA testing has shown that an estimated 33 prisoners spent more than 427 years in prison combined for crimes they didn’t commit.
Senate Hears Pleads
Among the 100 people who par-took in the roundtable discussion regarding changes in the criminal justice system throughout the state were Attorney General, Greg Abbott and Texas Supreme Court Justice Wallas Jefferson.
“Nothing is more important than clearing the wrongfully convicted,” said Senator John Whitmire, who was also a part of the discussion.
