Child Care Provider Wrongly Accused
A settlement was recently reached in the suit filed by a woman who claimed she was wrongly accused of a crime she didn’t commit.
The woman was forced to shut down her foster camp after allegations were made against her and as a result suffered both emotionally and financially.
Woman Charged with Child Abuse
Betty Lou Gaines worked as the former director of Woodside Trails Therapeutic Camp in Bastrop County at the time of the accusations.
The state of Texas, where the camp was located, reportedly believed Gaines was victimizing children by abusing them.
Plaintiff Fight Back
Gaines, who claimed her innocence all along, fought back against the state in an attempt to clear her record and regain her job and the camp.
She accused former State Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn of pressuring the state to shut the camp down in order to boost her chances in a political campaign to become governor.
Innocence Proven
After hearing Gaines’ case, two state judges ruled that she was innocent and found that there was no evidence of any kind of abuse at the camp.
Gaines was awarded $300,000 in the settlement and her record has been cleared.
