According to preliminary FBI statistics, the rate of murders and robberies in the United States is still on the rise, indicating that the nations lull in crime from 2001 to 2004 has ended.
For the second year in a row, the number of violent crimes has risen 2.2 percent—the first raise since 2001. Furthermore, the rate of violent crime between January and June of 2006 increased 3.7 percent compared to the same six month period in 2005.
“This is a concern we’ve been focused on,” said Gene Voegtlin, the legislative counsel for the International Association of Chiefs of Police. “A lot of (police) agencies are really stretched thin when it comes to the budget and their ability to aggressively combat crime.”
More Statistic Include:
· Murders rose at a rate of 1.4 percent, robberies increased by a dramatic 9.7 percent, and felony assaults by 1.2 percent, compared to the numbers in 2005.

· Rape figures dropped by less than one-tenth of one percent.

The FBI’s data was gathered from reports from over 11,000 law enforcement agencies countrywide.
Currently, the U.S. Department of Justice is studying 18 cities and suburban regions to find possible answers as to why the rate of violent crime is rising.
