The Fourth of July weekend has nationally become the most dangerous time to be on the roads. AAA predicts road crashes will leave 644 people dead from Friday through Monday, with just over half caused by alcohol.
In Virginia, two laws have been designed to crack down on underage drinking that will go into effect this Friday, at the start of the holiday weekend. Under the new Virginia laws, any underage drinkers and those who buy alcohol for them risk losing their drivers licenses for up to a year. The underage Virginia drinking laws are on top of a fine of up to $2,500 and as much as a year in jail.
According to a survey, 65 percent of teen drinkers have someone buy the alcohol for them, so lawmakers wanted to go after the people aiding the underage drinkers. Closing a previous loophole, the law states the underage drinker do not need to be seen holding the alcohol to constitute possession, like in the past, but simply testing positive for alcohol will qualify.
