There are several different types of felony crimes that can be committed in the United States. Felony crimes are offenses which are considered more serious than misdemeanor crimes. The penalty for all types of felony crimes can include incarceration, fines, and other punitive actions. Generally speaking the types of felony crimes can be divided into to categories: those that are violent in nature (by act or intent) and those that are not.
Different types of felony crimes are also ascribed a degree which indicates the severity of the crime. First degree crimes are the most serious types of felony crimes that a person can commit. These types of felony crimes are defined by degree based on federal or individual state law and may vary based on the presiding jurisdiction.
Some types of felony offenders will be tried through the state criminal justice system, while others will be tried in the federal courts. Types of felony offenses that are tried in the federal courts will be governed by federal laws while those tried in state courts will be governed by that specific state's laws. As a result, similar types of felony offenses will produce some degree of difference in outcome, depending on where the case is tried.
There are many types of felony crimes that are considered white collar crimes. These types of felony crimes are non-violent in nature. White collar types of felony crimes are committed in a business or professional setting in hopes of gaining financial advantage at the loss of another. Approximately one in five felony convictions are for white collar types of felony offenses. White collar types of felony crimes can include: kickbacks, tax evasion, insider trading, bribery, embezzlement, identity theft, antitrust, and at least a dozen forms of fraud.
Other types of felony offenses which are typically non-violent in nature and intent are property crimes like burglary, larceny (theft of a motor vehicle), fraud, and forgery. About two thirds of all convictions for property types of felony crimes result in incarceration. Drug offenses are also typically non-violent in nature and intent, such as types of felony crimes for drug possession or trafficking. Over ninety percent of persons convicted of drug related types of felony offenses will face incarceration.
There are also several types of felony offenses that are violent in nature or intent. Violent types of felony crimes can include murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, rape, sexual assault, aggravated assault, armed robbery, and other acts which pose or inflict bodily injury. Over 175,000 people were convicted of violent types of felony crimes in the state and federal systems in 2000. Violent types of felony convictions account for four percent of all federal convictions compared to more than sixteen percent of state convictions.
